The rise of Labubu: A quirky collectable captivating a new generation
In an age of fast-changing fads and digital distractions, one peculiar character is drawing the attention of young collectors worldwide — the Labubu doll.
With a distinctive blend of whimsy and oddity, these designer toys have recently surged in popularity, especially among teens and young adults. Originating from Asia's vibrant art toy scene, Labubu is more than just a collectable; it's fast becoming a cultural icon.
On social media, a reel featuring popular Egyptian singer Ahmed Saad has been trending since yesterday. It shows him unboxing his Labubu package. He joins a growing list of global celebrities sharing their fascination with the quirky doll, including Rihanna, Dua Lipa, the Kardashians, and Huda Kattan.
Salma, a 16-year-old student from Cairo, shared her excitement with Ahram Online:
"Labubu isn't just cute—it feels magical, like a tiny friend with its own story. I saved for months to get my first one, and now I want the whole collection!"
Dr. Iman El Tobgui, a psychiatrist specialising in adolescent behaviour, explains the phenomenon:
"Labubu dolls appeal to younger generations because they offer a sense of control and reward through collecting, especially in an unpredictable world. The character's odd yet endearing appearance resonates with teens exploring their identities.
"The blind box format also activates dopamine-driven anticipation, making the experience of acquiring one emotionally satisfying," she told Ahram Online.
Labubu is the brainchild of artist Kasing Lung in collaboration with Pop Mart, a Chinese brand renowned for its designer blind-box toys. First introduced as part of the Monsters series, Labubu is portrayed as a mischievous yet lovable forest creature.
Like trading cards, Labubu figures are sold in blind boxes, meaning buyers don't know which version they'll get. This element of surprise adds excitement and fuels the growing collectors' market.
While Labubu initially gained traction in China and across Asia, demand has recently spiked in the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. International influencers on TikTok and Instagram have helped propel its global popularity.
Some Labubu editions are extremely limited, with rare designs fetching hundreds of dollars on resale platforms like StockX, eBay, and niche collectable forums.
Unlike mass-produced toys, Labubu dolls are prized for their artistic craftsmanship. Each figure showcases intricate detail, and seasonal or themed releases—like Halloween Labubu or Dreamy Labubu—draw particular attention from collectors.
